The bounty of the Indian River Lagoon has long sustained local lifestyles, livelihoods, and the area’s natural beauty. On Saturday, September 19th at 2 p.m., the community gathered at the St. Lucie (Village) School, 2501 North Old Dixie Hwy, Fort Pierce, FL, to participate in “Our Lagoon…Our Legacy.” The program highlighted ways residents could contribute to the present and future health of the Lagoon.

Scholars, scientists, and representatives from Docks for a Clean Lagoon, the University of Florida/IFAS Florida Sea Grant program, One Lagoon, and the Manatee Center served as key presenters. They discussed topics such as vertical oyster gardens for cleaner waters, shoreline restoration, and protective measures. Presenters emphasized how individual actions can influence the Lagoon’s wellbeing, and the afternoon included interactive programs and hands‑on projects.

The event was sponsored by the Florida Remembered Society with support from a Florida Humanities Florida250 public programs grant. Additional funding for the workshops was provided by the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program.
